The next thing you’ll need is shoes and socks; I suggest getting standard running shoes that fit really well. They will be perfect for hiking!

Last but not least are your hiking shoes. This is very important; these will keep you safe from small sharp rocks and other debris on the trail. You need to make sure they are right for the trails you’ll be going on, as different trails have different requirements.

Make sure it’s not too cold or too hot (obviously). The weather can change really fast in most countries, so most likely, if you intend to be on a trail for more than a few hours, have at least two layers of clothing, one lighter and one heavier.

You should also consider how far you plan to hike. If it’s going to be a long day, make sure you are well hydrated and have eaten something before your departure time (about 4-5 hours before)

Also, pack some food with you.

It helps to have a friend with you when going hiking – that way, if one of you gets injured, there’s someone else to help, and also for the company. If not, just make sure you are safe! Don’t hike alone!

Make sure your phone is fully charged as well before leaving so it can be used in case of an emergency.

You should make sure before you go hiking that your backpack is perfectly fitted as there is nothing worse than a bad fitting backpack. It’s not good for your back or your shoulders and this way you won’t be enjoying yourself after an hour.

Make sure to know the route beforehand, check if there are any creeks/rivers and also check the terrain. This way you can see what equipment you’ll need and what clothing as well.

Pack some food for yourself and put some drinks as well in a water bottle that you have with yourself.

Let’s say you’re going on a 2-day hike; make sure to take everything that is necessary as it will be very difficult to come by anything out there.

  • A knife (simple to use one as they come in all shapes and sizes) – You never know when it might come in handy.
  • Another important thing is a first aid kit, just for emergencies – This can save someone’s life.
  • GPS device – If you have one, bring it. Even though technology fails sometimes, this is still useful, especially in emergency situations.
  • Gloves are very useful to keep your hands warm and also protect them from the environment.
  • Socks – I don’t think this needs much explaining; you know that feet can get cold. Bring an extra pair or two, just in case.
  • Hat for sun protection – You’ll need this if you’re going on a 2-day hike and the days are sunny.
  • Jacket for rain protection – This is very easy to forget but can save you from getting wet. If it’s raining where you’re going, this can also be useful, so there’s no need to hike in a downpour.
  • Sneakers that fit really well – Just normal sneakers; I recommend these as they are made for hiking.
  • Headlamp with spare batteries – This is only if you plan to hike in the dark as it can be dangerous; it will help you get back to your camp safely. Just make sure not to shine it at any animals as this might scare them off, and then they’ll be really hard to find.
  • Triangular bandage – This is only if you have a certain type of injury, as this can be used to stop the bleeding.
  • A map with all the water sources on it – This way, you know where there are pockets of water and where there aren’t. You don’t want to get dehydrated, so having this will help you know where to go.
