Tips For Getting Back Down Safely, Including When Not To Go Up Or Down At All

The most important tip when climbing Enchanted Rock is to be careful on the steep shale section of the Eastside.

Use caution if you see any loose rock, don’t climb higher than your comfort zone, and always wear a helmet! Make sure someone knows where you are going before heading up or down. If something goes wrong, it could take hours for emergency responders to get there. If you are not sure, consider climbing on another day or visiting the park when it is less crowded.

When is the best time to climb: The ideal climbing season at Enchanted Rock (when most people visit) is in winter and spring.

During summer, it can get extremely hot, with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit not uncommon!

Fall brings mild days but also unpredictable weather like thunderstorms that could make hiking difficult. Be prepared for all four seasons if you visit between November and March.

There is no camping on top of the Rock overnight. All-day visitors must be off the top by 10 p.m. The park has walk-in campsites and a rudimentary site, and a group campground that wasn’t on the dome over a year ago.
